Slave Labor - REAL SCARECROW
In Response To: Re: Brazil 18-19--SCARECROW ()

Great comments. In line with what Amdf says, I believe the biggest scarecrow is the systematic exploitation of slave labor. Not here in Brazil, despite what some of our authorities and NGOs like to say. Sometimes a temporary worker's house with a leaky roof, a ripped mattress or if he does more than 2 hours of overtime in a day is enough to get you a citation for slave labor...

As I posted before, when a big roaster gives away a few million seedlings to poor communities in a poor country, it's not an act of kindness. These families make barely enough not to starve to death, but have no hope of getting out of poverty and that's how the coffee industry wants/needs them. The big guys get coffee for "free", help keep prices in check and tell consumers they are helping fight poverty, when, in fact they are perpetuating it.

It's outsourced slave labor, they don't even have to worry about transporting or feeding the workers... Really evil stuff, IMHO

Unless consuming countries start to see those practices for what they really are, and take decisive action, I'm not particularly hopeful...
