Relief Fund Established to Help Puerto Rican Farmers, Boost Coffee Production
CoffeeNetwork (New York) – In the wake of Hurricane Maria, which hit Puerto Rico, devastating as much as 80% of the island’s agricultural production, The Puerto Rico Agricultural Relief Fund has been established by the Puerto Rico Farm Bureau.
The fund is geared towards families that owned dairy and livestock farms, and those producing field crops, plantains, bananas, papaya and coffee.
Tax-deductible donations can be made to the foundation to assist Puerto Rico’s farmers and ranchers. Donations to this fund will be dispersed via an application process directly to the farmers and ranchers affected by the hurricane, with 100% of the donations to this fund going directly to aid farmers and ranchers in Puerto Rico.
According to various reports, the coffee industry lost half of its plants and might take three years or longer to return to the same level of output.
Of the roughly 4,600 coffee producers on the island, many are small scale farms ranging in size from 1 to 100 acres and producing less than 1,000 pounds of coffee beans per year.
