Minas Gerais Should See Coffee Production Recover to 2016-2017 Levels
CoffeeNetwork (New York) – Expectations for coffee production in Brazil’s main Arabica producing state, Minas Gerais, are high for the 2018-2019 crop year, according to an interview with the Agriculture Research Company of Minas Gerais (EPAMIG) this morning. “The crop will be big this year,” Researcher César Botelho, coordinator of EPAMIG´s Coffee Research Program told CoffeeNetwork. “It should be as high as the 2016-2017 crop,” he says. EPAMIG and CONAB had pegged Minas Gerais’ 2016-2017 crop at 30.7 million 60-kg bags.
“So far the condition of the trees is very good, although there may be a drop from here until the harvest as very low prices have led producers to slightly reduced crop management,” explained Botelho.
Despite rainfall being below average for most of the State’s coffee areas, rainfall was ample enough for good development of the crop, he says. “We did not have a very strong Indian summer this year.”
