NCA Responds to US Action on ICO

NCA Comments on US Withdrawal from ICO

CoffeeNetwork (New York) – In an interview with CoffeeNetwork this morning, William Murray, President of the National Coffee Association of America (NCA) made the following remark:

“Last year we recommended to the US Government that they remain a part of the ICO, and we were disappointed with this decision. We believe that the ICO is a valuable and important platform for multinational cooperation within the global coffee sector. Despite this withdrawal, the National Coffee Association, USA, continues to support the ICO, and will continue to participate, as a private sector organization, in the future work of the ICO.”

Murray also noted that last year, the then-new US Administration began a review of such multilateral memberships and agreements, against a backdrop of cuts to US State Department budget (the US Government pays dues to the ICO). This review wasn’t particular to the ICO – it should be seen in the context of a more general reassessment of multilateral commitments, ranging from the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) to the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP), from the Paris Agreement on Climate to the US-Korea Free Trade Agreement (KORUS FTA.)
